Happy Fourth of July! Eric and I decided to embrace DC today and head into the city for independence festivities. We’ve been reading about massive crowds, security checkpoints, public transportation and all the reasons NOT to attend this monumental celebration. But you know us – if it’s not an adventure, why bother?
We have very loose plans today. All the websites advise us to take the metro but all the people we’ve talked to say it’s insanity. We experienced the crowds of Cherry Blossom, which is a 2 week event. Our expectation is a NYC NYE equivalent as millions pour into 1 rectangular mile sea of red white and blue.
Thanks to my my new friend Susan, the St. Regis on 16th street will be home base. http://www.stregiswashingtondc.com/
I’m co-hosting a women’s leadership event there on July 10 and Susan is event planner extraordinaire. We’ll valet there, pick up the Independence Day scavenger hunt map at the concierge then hoof it to Constitution Ave for the parade that starts at 11:45.
Eric’s made the treklist – starting with healthy breakfast and emergency snacks of granola bars and water. We’ll be carrying beach chairs on our backs, outfitted with pouches to carry sunscreen, blanket, bug spray and blogging equipment.
Things on our to-do list – parade, reading of the Declaration of Independence at the national archives, Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond on the Capitol lawn and fireworks at the mall. Let’s see if we make it that long!!
And we’re off!
